Schofield Pass, Crystal River Trails

Crystal River Trail

Schofield Pass starts as an easy road as you ride through an open area with a few houses in it, but quickly turns into one the most difficult and dangerous  trails in the State of Colorado.

This particular creek crossing had a bridge but the one just down the trail is very deep. When we first crossed it it was almost to the top of the seats of our motorcycles but when we came back after it started raining the water was over our seats. You can see by the picture how fast the water can get deep in the rain. Making matter worse is that there is no room for error while crossing due the the Devil's Punch Bowl

The section of trail is know as the Devil's Punch Bowl and is very difficult. Trying to come up this area in the rain was very difficult and very scary. The entire time you are right on the edge of the cliff and one wrong move could be your last. On July 9, 1970 nine people died as their car fell into the punch bowl. 		 

Crystal River Power House

Once past the Devil's Punch Bowl you are rewarded with the view of the power house located along the river. Besides the power house the entire canyon in beautiful. There is no real reason to go past the powerhouse so you should turn around there to return to Crested Butte.
     

Gunsight Pass ATV Trail

Gunsight Pass trail is a more difficult trail than Slate Road. The trail is steeper and you must go though the creek to drive the trail.

We rode on the southern side of the trail system where many ski resorts can be seen.  Since that time we have return and ridden the eastern trails, see pictures below.
     
Directions: Follow the signs of Slate and Gothic Roads.
